Many individuals have one or more tattoos that serve as a reminder of a different time, some of which they may have outgrown. Luckily, laser technology today has made it possible to remove body ink faster and more effectively than ever before. Laser tattoo removal is the most effective way to eliminate tattoo ink.

Whether you have a small tattoo on your leg or an entire back or arm tattoo, we want you to feel comfortable and confident when you come in for your treatment. And that means knowing exactly what the process entails. If you are thinking about having your tattoo removed, here’s everything you need to know about how laser tattoo removal works.

Everybody knows that tattoos are permanent – but not everybody knows why.

Tattoo application involves the use of a needle that embeds ink particles into the dermis of the skin (the deepest layer of the skin). When the needle inserts the ink into the skin, the body’s immune system recognizes it immediately and releases cells called phagocytes which are sent off to remove the ink. Phagocytes are powerful cells that protect the body from bacteria and other foreign substances. But when it comes to tattoo ink, they have a tough time removing the ink.

The phagocytes are not able to do their job well against the ink. Since they are unable to remove the ink particles, the ink remains permanently trapped in the skin. But those cells don’t give up easily as they continuously try to remove it. Therefore, tattoos tend to fade and lose color over time with this continued process from the phagocytes.

Ink colors and brands also depth of penetration of the ink can pose a problem for some technologies to remove the ink. We use the Chrome Q-Switch.

The Laser Tattoo Removal Process

With powerful lasers, we can speed up the natural fading process. Our laser emits short pulses of light energy into the tattoo, breaking the trapped ink particles into smaller fragments. The ink particles absorb the wavelengths of the laser, and as they shatter into fragments, the phagocytes can do their job and flush them out.

Each pulse of energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the tattoo ink. As the tattoo ink particles absorb the energy from the laser pulses, they heat up and shatter into tiny fragments. Over the weeks following treatment, the body’s immune system will work to remove the ink particles away, lightening the appearance of the tattoo. Each laser treatment will break down more and more of the tattoo ink until none remains.

It does require a series of treatments to remove a tattoo completely. With our Chrome laser we are utilizing a QS technology which typically fades tattoos in as little as 8 treatments. With some tattoos, results cannot be expected to be removed completely but will have a tremendous improvement with minimal shadowing of the old tattoo. The rate of success is different for every patient. We recommend prior too and post drinking lots of water and maintaining a healthy diet which can help speed up the process of removing your tattoos.
